About Satellite Beach
Satellite Beach is a city in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,577 at the 2000 census. As of 2005, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 9,811. It is part of the Palm Bay–Melbourne–Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area. With both ocean and river frontage, Satellite Beach is the largest beachside community in South Brevard County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.7 km²). 2.4 square miles (6.2 km²) of it is land and 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²) of it (29.46%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 9,577 people, 3,952 households, and 2,877 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,030.6 inhabitants per square mile (1,553.7/km²). There were 4,257 housing units at an average density of 1,791.6 per square mile (690.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.99% White, 1.02% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.95% of the population.
Satellite Beach is home to the only traditional Jewish synagogue along the Brevard County coastline.
There were 3,952 households out of which 26.8% had children under the living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the city the population was distributed by age groups as follows: 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $55,571, and the median income for a family was $63,442. Males had a median income of $42,079 versus $28,259 for females. The per capita income for the city was $27,181. About 2.7% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those ages 65 or over.
